Overview

In today's business world, communication among entities is primarily through email. As email travels through various nodes/servers, which are invisible to the communicating parties, there is a possibility that these messages can be seen, altered or replaced by a third party with malicious intent.

You need to protect your electronic communications like email using a foolproof mechanism just like you protect paper-based messages like letters and memos by putting them in a sealed envelope. You can achieve this by the use of Personal Digital Certificates issued by TCS-CA.

In addition to securing email, the Personal Digital Certificate also assures the identity of a person in the digital world and provides a means of associating the person with the electronic documents, similar to the association made in paper-based transactions using handwritten signatures.

What is a Digital Certificate?

Digital Certificates serve as an identity of an individual for a certain purpose, e.g. a driving license identifies someone who can legally drive in a particular country. Likewise, a Digital Certificate can be presented electronically to prove your identity or your right to access information or services on the Internet.

Digital Certificates are the digital equivalents (i.e. electronic format) of physical or paper Certificates like your driving license, passport or membership cards.

Why should I trust a Digital Certificate's contents?

The same reason you trust what is stated in a driving license: endorsement by the relevant authority (Department of Transport) in the form of a difficult-to-forge signature or stamp of approval. Digital Certificates are endorsed in a similar manner by a Certifying Authority. The Certifying Authority is a trusted entity that is empowered by law to issue Digital Certificates. It is responsible for vetting all applications for Digital Certificates, and once satisfied, "stamps" its difficult-to-forge Digital Signature on all the Certificates it issues, attesting their validity.

TCS-CA is a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) and is authorized by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India, to issue legally valid Digital Certificates in India under the Indian IT Act 2000.

Tata Consultancy Services-Certifying Authority (TCS-CA) offers a range of Digital Certificates for multiple applications. Depending on the level of trustworthiness you want to create towards the people you communicate with over the Net, TCS-CA offers three classes of Personal Certificates:
